Do I need to know anything about Mahjong before taking a class?
Not at all! Our beginner classes are designed for brand-new players. You do not need any prior experience, and you do not need to understand the card, tiles, or rules before you come. We will walk you through it step by step.
What kind of Mahjong do you teach?
The Pineapple Tile teaches American Mahjong, which is played using the National Mah Jongg League card.
Do I need to bring my own Mahjong set?
No. Mahjong sets, racks, mats, and teaching supplies will be provided during class unless otherwise noted.
Do I need to purchase a National Mah Jongg League card?
For beginner classes, a current National Mah Jongg League card may be included or available for purchase depending on the class offering. The card is used during play and is an important part of American Mahjong.
What is Mahjong 101?
Mahjong 101 is our beginner class for new players. You will learn the tiles, how to read the card, basic rules, game flow, Charleston, passing, calling tiles, and how to begin playing with confidence.
How long does it take to learn Mahjong?
Most players can understand the basics after a beginner class, but Mahjong becomes more comfortable with practice. The more you play, the more natural the card, strategy, and rhythm of the game will feel.
What if I take a class and still feel confused?
That is completely normal! Mahjong has a learning curve, and no one is expected to master it in one class. We offer guided play and practice opportunities to help new players build confidence after learning the basics.
What is guided play?
Guided play is for players who know the basics but still want support while playing. A teacher is available to answer questions, help with the card, explain rules, and guide the table as needed.
What is open play?
Open play is for players who already know how to play and are comfortable playing more independently. It is a fun way to meet other players, enjoy the game, and gather around the table.
Can I come by myself?
Absolutely! You do not need to bring a group. Many people come alone, and The Pineapple Tile is designed to be a welcoming place to meet new friends and connect with other players.
Can I book a private class or group lesson?
Yes. Private classes and small group lessons may be available for friends, families, neighborhoods, clubs, or organizations. This is a great option if you want to learn with your own group in a more personal setting.
Do you offer private parties or special events?
Yes. The Pineapple Tile can offer Mahjong-themed gatherings, private parties, and special events. These are perfect for birthdays, girls' nights, neighborhood groups, retreats, and social clubs.
How many people are in each class?
Class sizes may vary depending on the type of class or event. Smaller classes allow for more personal instruction, while larger events may include multiple tables and guided support.
What should I bring to class?
Just bring yourself and a willingness to learn! If anything specific is needed, such as a current NMJL card, it will be listed in the class details.
Is Mahjong hard to learn?
Mahjong can feel overwhelming at first because there are tiles, rules, and a card to understand. But with clear instructions and practice, it starts to make sense. Our goal is to make the learning process fun, relaxed, and encouraging.
Do you teach strategy?
Beginner classes focus mostly on understanding the game and learning how to play. As players become more comfortable, guided play and advanced sessions may include more strategy, hand selection, defensive play, and tips for improving your game.
Can experienced players attend?
Yes. Experienced players are welcome at open play, special events, and any classes or sessions designed for continued learning or strategy.
How do I sign up for a class or event?
Class and event registration is available on our Classes & Events page. Space is limited, so advance registration is recommended.
What is your cancellation policy?
Registration fees are nonrefundable but may be transferred to another person with advance notice or transferred to another event. If The Pineapple Tile cancels an event, attendees will receive a full refund.
Where are classes held?
Class locations may vary by date, event, or group size. Location details will be provided with each class or event listing.
